Having turned Juxtapoz into a generation and genre-defining art magazine during his ten years' tenure as editor-in-chief, Jamie O'Shea is working independently these days as a Creative Director. O'Shea continues to bring high-end projects to fruition. He's working with his creative partner Darren Romanelli to re-brand classic bands like the Beatles and his pals ZZ Top, and brokering sales for street-credible but gallery-averse artists like KAWS.
Now living in Los Angeles, O'Shea has not entirely given up the less remunerative struggles of being an editor. Post-Juxtapoz, O'Shea has just signed on as editor of Spread ArtCulture, a new quarterly art-and-design magazine from New York, and is lining up his myriad allies to start an art magazine of his own, in which all those careers he's launched in the last decade will be rubbing shoulders with their "official" art-world counterparts.

There’s a new Big Brother in LA’s graffiti world, and it’s known as “GRAFFITI TRACKER,” where “Every wall tells a story.” Looking to capitalize on urban blight, the private upstart monitors graffiti “hotspots” around the city, keeping detailed records of tagging names, locations, gang affiliations, & frequency, compiling detailed databases on individual artists and areas in general. For a hefty fee, local law enforcement or private individuals being vandalized can then tap into the company’s detailed records, which also include maps and photo archives to help make arrests. Of course, GT also accepts outside information and taggers can phone in tips on their (more…)

WTF?? FILES///IN THE NEWS///THE DRIVERS’ 10 COMMANDMENTS…
phofa - 6/19/2007

In an attempt to curb the ravages of “Road Rage” and other motor vehicle-borne transgressions against the almighty, today the Vatican officially issued a set of “Drivers’ Ten Commandments,” (seriously) intended to keep members of the flock in a “charitable & forthright” state of mind while behind the wheel. (Note that commandment #1 is recycled and #5 is particularly interesting)…

jesus-tour.jpg
(Jesus Tour, by Glenn Barr)

THE DRIVER’S TEN COMMANDMENTS:
1. You shall not kill.
2. The road shall be for you a means of communion between people and not of mortal harm.
3. Courtesy, uprightness and prudence will help you deal with unforeseen events.
4. Be charitable and help your neighbor in need, especially victims of accidents.
5. Cars shall not be for you an expression of power and domination, and an occasion of sin.
6. Charitably convince the young and not so young not to drive when they are not in a fitting condition to do so.
7. Support the families of accident victims.
8. Bring guilty motorists and their victims together, at the appropriate time, so that they can undergo the liberating experience of forgiveness.
9. On the road, protect the more vulnerable party.
10. Feel responsible toward others.

In addition, the code urged motorists to always “drive with a moral sense,” obey all traffic laws, and to pray when behind the wheel, performing the sign of the cross before starting off and saying the Rosary along the way (its “rhythm and gentle repetition does not distract the driver’s attention.”) Curiously, the document failed to mention any need for the application of dashboard Christ or Virgin Mary sculptures within vehicles. Apparently aesthetic decisions are still left up to the faithful…

Graffiti helps to develop an awareness of immediate expressive and uncontrolled freedom. I want kids to have this possibility. NYC///KEEPING UP WITH THE “SPLASHER”…

Shepard Fairey gets shut down…

Since NYC’s most notorious vandal (or is it “anti-vandal”) known only as “The Splasher” started defacing Manhattan’s most notable pieces of street art (which, in turn, were defacing public & private property) last year, with new “splashes” showing up constantly, not a single week has passed where at least a couple people (private parties, usually angry, and media alike) have contacted me trying to figure out who this counter-revolutionary revolutionary is, exactly. While I can say that I honestly have no clue—though I’ve been put onto some very legitimate & likely tips, but that’s all I’m saying, for now—it should be pointed out that SAM ANDERSON wrote an in-depth feature on the phenomenon a few weeks back for none other than NEW YORK MAGAZINE tracing the movements of the city’s latest villain over the course of the past year. HAVE A LOOK:

372192756_4a225f3a14.jpg

THE VANDALISM VANDAL
Who’s been splashing the city’s most prized graffiti? The hunt for the radical, young—and possibly lovelorn—conceptual-Marxist street-art supervillain.
By Sam Anderson, New York Magazine

I. MEDITATIONS ON A STREET-ART SKIRMISH:
Graff beef! Fetishized commodities! Counterrevolutionary fucktards!

The first good look I got at one of the Splasher’s actual splashes was at a place called the Candy Factory, an abandoned brick wall at the south end of Soho that’s become, over a couple of generations, one of the most important nodes of illegal art in the city—a shabby outdoor Louvre of wheatpasted posters, stencils, and stickers squeezed between a construction zone and a parking lot. The view changes almost daily: Its prime spots are probably fifteen layers thick. On the day I went, at the center of the mess stood a Technicolor poster of an anthropomorphic pickle-shaped rainbow; above him, there was a portrait of a little Swiss-looking girl innocently playing a flute. And above her, in the upper right corner of the wall, was a sad, frowning candy corn, looking even sadder because someone had flung white paint over its face—a ragged spray that covered one cheek and part of his nose. Near the splash was a poster-size manifesto, partially torn, apparently declaring the candy corn’s crimes against humanity. It was titled AVANT-GARDE: ADVANCE SCOUTS FOR CAPITAL, and it read, in part:

“REVOLUTIONARY CREATIVITY DOES NOT SHOCK OR ENTERTAIN THE BOURGEOISIE, IT DESTROYS THEM. OUR STRUGGLE CANNOT BE HUNG ON WALLS. DESTROY THE MUSEUMS, IN THE STREETS AND EVERYWHERE.”

The manifesto ended with a warning: “THE REMOVAL OF THIS DOCUMENT COULD RESULT IN INJURY, AS WE HAVE MIXED THE WHEATPASTE WITH TINY SHARDS OF GLASS.”

So began my tortuous descent into the curious case of the Splasher—a scandal that had gripped the city’s underground art scene for months. It was a tricky case, with triple-crossed motives, riddles nested in mysteries, and loops of self-devouring irony linked together in a gigantic chain stretching clear across the city, from the most expensive Soho boutiques to the Williamsburg waterfront to the industrial streets of Bushwick. Everyone was a suspect: cops, ex-students, anarchists, petty vandals, corporate marketing execs, self-made kings of the underground art scene, even some of the victims themselves.

371223904_dc12e54dab.jpg
WK’s bombed bomb…

Here at the beginning, then, why don’t we just lay out the mystery, the so-called facts, as plain as we can make them. In the fall, some anonymous figure started vandalizing the city’s most celebrated vandalism—by which I mean not traditional seventies-style spray-paint graffiti but a relatively new, gentrified outgrowth of that tradition that’s come to be called “street art”: multimedia works of astonishing polish and complexity and beauty, often created by artists without a “street” bone in their bodies. Many went to art school and have grown-up jobs and lucrative gallery careers and are terrified of the cops and traditional graffiti crews. Over the past ten years, as street art has become big business—upscale art shows in London and Tokyo, advertising contracts, waves of positive media coverage, blogfuls of groupies—it’s generated exactly the kind of internal backlash you’d expect in a subculture conceived of as guerrilla warfare against consumer culture. The Splasher epitomizes this backlash. In the middle of the night, about six months ago, this vandalism vandal started hitting the scene’s most acclaimed masterpieces, works that might have gone for $10,000 or $20,000 or $30,000 in a gallery, with big sloppy splashes of housepaint—teal, white, purple, yellow, electric blue. Beneath the splash he—or she, or they, or (who knows?) us—would leave a manifesto ranting, in Marxist jargon, about commodification and fetishization and the author’s intention of “euthanizing your bourgeois fad.” From November to March, the splashes arrived in bursts, busy weeks interspersed with long fallow periods. By the end of the campaign, observers counted nearly a hundred of them.

LONDON///THE DIAMOND SKULL CHRONICLES…

Since being unveiled to the public at London’s WHITE CUBE GALLERY as the most expensive piece of modern art ever made with a pricetag of $98,000,000, DAMIEN HIRST’s diamond encrusted skull (titled, “For The Love of God”) has yet to be sold. According to the gallery, three parties have shown some interest, most notably, the pop star George Michael (who probably thinks it would look perfect perched atop John Lennon’s white “Imagine” piano, which he famously acquired several years ago). Whether it can be sold at full price remains to be seen, in what will be a true test of the price bubble that currently surrounds the world’s modern art market.

For those mere mortals who can’t afford to even ponder such a purchase, worry not. Mr Hirst has just announced that he will be offering prints of his masterpiece through the gallery in various limited editions with prices ranging from $2,000 to a whopping $20,000. The most expensive versions, limited to 250 prints, are coated with real diamond dust. The saga continues. Start saving your pennies, puny humans…

It’s been a minute since we checked in with our favorite Chi-Town native, DZINE, and last nite’s debut of his latest art installation consisting of a totally kustom “lowrider” speedboat & bicycle at this year’s VENICE BIENNALE seemed like the perfect occasion. Eschewing the traditional venues of the highbrow international art fair, D instead chose to make his statement in the city’s most famous place, its intricate maze of canals with a kustom float unlike any other, titled “The Dnipro.” Featuring a total of nine TV screens, 22 speakers with lights, eight amps, original 1963 Impala chrome trim and side mirrors, custom bucket seats, ostrich leather interior with religious fabric accents, state-of-the-art Pioneer CD/DJ equipment with Alpine touch screen videos, a laser light show and a smoke machine, all powered by chromed-out Chevy engine with (of course) neon lighting, this little beauty is long on showmanship and short on subtlety. When on land it travels in a matching kustom trailer, which also houses an equally badass matching lowrider trike the artist has constructed to make his travels on land more stylish. Is it bitchin? Sho ‘nuff. Is it art? You be the judge…

The artist formerly known as Brian Donnelly releases a formidable array of top-quality product on a regular basis but this edition stands out as an absolute masterpiece. Produced in an edition of 10 (with two artist proofs), this figure was fabricated by master craftsmen in Japan in a traditional process capped off with a rich black patina that gives the work an indelible luster (an edition of ten color-changing silver painted figures was also available). Housing the statue is a custom wooden “coffin” case hand-painted by the artist himself (all 20 of them, that is, no silk-screens here) as worthy of display as the edition it contains. That means DRM-free songs purchased from Apple that get picked up by other users will be traceable back to the original purchaser by any remotely computer-savvy user. The international (street??) art collective known as FAILE took a page from the Banksy playbook when they unveiled their latest show, “Nothing Lasts Forever” at a private reception in NYC Wednesday nite. Forgoing the traditional gallery setup, the group rented their own grimy warehouse space on the Lower East Side and quickly sold out more than 40 artworks ranging from $25—$35,000 on up, clearing well over a million in sales before the opening red carpet was even laid. In attendance were Lower Manhattan’s hipster elite mingling with well-heeled art buyers looking to get in early on the next big thing (in this case, however, that was last year). Of course, the work was top notch and the collective’s multimedia Pop collages were as beautiful and focused as ever. Supertouch’s own Stuntboy (aka: Erik Foss) was on hand to capture the magic.
