At any given moment, hundreds of kitschy-cute “kawaii” art shows are taking place in Tokyo’s sprawling maze of backstreet galleries, but the antidote to all that can be found at the appropriately-named GALERIA DE MUERTE in Ueno, where Japan’s reigning gore artist TOSHIHIRO EGAWA’s work is currently on display. Having created literally hundreds of album covers for international death metal bands with names like Guttural Engorgement, Vomit Remnants, Internal Suffering, and Purulent Infection, Egawa fabricates his bloody CG terror-scapes for maximum shock value, and rarely falls short of the mark.
